Techniques and instruments for fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy

August 10, 2026 Loock Lab

Fluorescence EEM setup - a conventional fluorescence emission spectrum - a fluorescence EEM spectrum of the same sample

Why would we spend months to write a review on Fluorescence EEM spectroscopy, if reviews can now be generated by LLMs in minutes?
Arguably, a critical review that differentiates, characterizes, and evaluates related but different methods, is (currently?) beyond the ability of AI. We attempted to write such a review, and hope it is useful to help both seasoned practitioners and newcomers to the field.
So, cuddle up with a cup of coffee and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of fluorescence EEM spectroscopy!
Bonus: the last section is a comparison of the most common chemometrics methods to analyse EEM’s.
